Recess
Outdoor recess is scheduled daily to afford students opportunities for suitable social interaction and physical activity. Students are expected to arrive at school ready for outdoor activities each day. In the event of inclement weather, the building administrator(s) will assess factors such as temperature, heat index, wind chill, and playground conditions to decide whether recess will take place outdoors or indoors. Indoor recess may involve teacher-approved physical activities or games. However, chasing (tag) games are not allowed.
It's important to note that these guidelines serve as general recommendations and are not intended to replace professional judgment.
During the Winter
- 90 degrees to 32 degrees: Ideal for outdoor play; enjoy the winter weather.
- 32 degrees to 10 degrees: Exercise caution; consider reducing outdoor time as needed.
- 10 degrees or below: It is not advisable for children to go outside.
**Wind-chill is factored into the temperature assessment.
During the Summer
- 32 degrees to 90 degrees: Ideal for outdoor play, providing a comfortable environment.
- 90 degrees to 100 degrees: Exercise caution; consider reducing outdoor time as needed.
- 100 degrees or above: It is not advisable for children to go outside.
**Temperature includes heat index
Use caution: Children should be clothed appropriately for the weather and have access to fluids and sunscreen. Closely observe children for signs of becoming too hot or too cold.
If a student must remain inside at recess for health reasons, a doctor’s note should be sent to the teacher indicating the reason and duration. In general, if a child is not well enough to go to recess, the child is not well enough to be in school. Recess privileges may also be denied for disciplinary reasons.
